Goodbye, Medium

Farewell and thanks for the memories

After a year of writing on Medium (and a year before that of reading on Medium), I’ve decided to move on.

Naturally, last year was the year for learning new things. I had already made the decision to become serious about my creative pursuits, but 2020 forced my hand. Over roughly twelve months of writing regularly for Medium, I learnt how to craft a personal essay, write creative non-fiction, and read many interesting books about creativity, psychology and more. Oh, and I also wrote 40 000 words in one month thanks to hearing about the NaNoWriMo challenge from a fellow Medium writer.

I grew only a very modest following in my time but my writing and editing skills improved immeasurably. I’ve had some lovely interactions with other writers too, along with differences of opinion, civil and uncivil, but that’s the internet for you.

Outside of Medium, I’ve had some minor successes with my short fiction writing and I am working on a children’s story project. You can only have so many irons in the fire, however, so I’m focussing on those projects for now. I will continue to write the occasional essay and book review which you can read on my website.

My website is mariablackman.net or you can find me at the usual social places.

Goodbye, fellow writers, and may your words flow fast and freely. May your editors be honest but kind, and your readers ever eager.
