NaNoWriMo Week 4

It’s the final countdown

Just typing that headline got me humming “It’s the final countdown” by Europe. I haven’t started dressing in glam rock attire and playing air guitar. Instead, I am working my way to the end of the NaNoWriMo challenge. One week to go!

In the last week, I have been lagging behind my word quota on most days. There have been interruptions from work and family commitments, including some unwelcome health news relating to a family member. Still, I am up to 33000 words, which is double what I did when I attempted NaNoWriMo back in 2008.

I have really struggled with the feeling of not being a good enough writer this week. In the last six months, I have written lots of short fiction and I can feel that my short story writing has improved because of it. Discounting the last NaNoWriMo attempt, this is the first time I’ve tried writing a novel length work. I was getting worried that the climax and resolution of my plot is not developed enough and that there’s not enough action for it to be a whole novel. Maybe it will just be a novella at around 40000 words. I thought to myself today…maybe I won’t finish NaNoWriMo at all…gasp!

What did I do next? I started writing again from where I had left off. After not writing very much on the weekend, I had fresh ideas and a slightly new angle for my protagonist. It…
